Start with the room, not the island size
Measure the room, doorways and existing cabinet runs first. Include appliance doors and nearby walkways on your sketch. A shape that fits on a drawing may still leave too little usable space when a dishwasher, oven or refrigerator is open.
Choose what belongs in the island
An island can provide preparation space, drawers, waste storage or seating. A sink or cooking appliance also brings plumbing, electrical or ventilation requirements. Decide which tasks matter most before adding features to the cabinet list.
Review seating and finished ends
Seating overhangs, countertop support, exposed cabinet backs and decorative end panels need to be included in the design. These details affect both dimensions and cost. Countertops and installation are separate from the cabinet planning range.
